Rodeo Event Overview

Event 1 — Written Test
This station is a 50-question written exam focused on core DOT regulations and safe operating practices. Questions are multiple-choice and designed to confirm that each driver understands the regulatory basics that support safe, compliant operations every day.
  • Coverage includes HOS (Hours of Service) fundamentals and log requirements.
  • Pre-trip and post-trip inspection expectations and proper DVIR usage.
  • Basic vehicle control, load securement, and cargo responsibility.
  • Required safety equipment and defect reporting responsibilities.
  • General DOT compliance, roadside inspection awareness, and company policy alignment.
Scores from this event make up the written-knowledge portion of the overall Driver Rodeo results and are combined with the Asset Inspection and Road Course events to determine final standings.

Event 2 — Asset Inspection (DVIR)
This station simulates a standard pre-trip DVIR-style walk-around inspection. Drivers are expected to perform a thorough, methodical check of the assigned unit and identify both safety-critical and minor defects, just as they would before leaving the yard.
  • Follow a consistent walk-around pattern (front to back, top to bottom).
  • Inspect tires, wheels, lights, mirrors, glass, and body damage.
  • Verify key safety items: brakes, suspension, steering, coupling, and securement points.
  • Check required safety equipment (triangles, fire extinguisher, chock blocks, etc.).
  • Document findings as a DVIR, clearly noting any defects and whether the unit is safe to operate.
Scoring is based on thoroughness, the number and severity of issues correctly identified, and how clearly the driver documents their inspection on the DVIR.

Event 3 — Road Course
The road course is a multi-station driving event that evaluates real-world vehicle control, spatial awareness, and safe maneuvering under pressure. Drivers progress through a series of staged obstacles and precision tasks:
  • Staging & Start – Properly position the unit, secure seat belt, adjust mirrors, and demonstrate a controlled, safe launch.
  • Split the Axle – Navigate between tight cone lanes, keeping axles centered and avoiding cone contact.
  • Alley Dock 1 – Execute a straight or lightly offset backing maneuver into a marked dock or lane.
  • Diminishing Alley – Drive forward through a cone alley that narrows, maintaining control, lane position, and speed management.
  • Alley Dock 2 – Perform a more aggressive, offset alley dock requiring setup, pivot control, and trailer tracking awareness.
  • Wrong Way – U-Turn – Simulate a tight, controlled turnaround in a constrained space without striking cones or over-traveling the boundary.
Scoring is based on safety, cone hits, smoothness of control, use of mirrors, and adherence to course instructions at each station.
